Among the thousand participants attending THIMUN Singapore this year, the Delegate of Portugal, Kai Alexander Mueller of the Jerudong International School in Barunei, stood out from all others and showed much promise to become a great debater. Recommended by the Chair of ECOSOC (Wan Jin Park aof Shanghai American Scaool), Mueller was said to have a “clear voice” on stage and to be “very knowledgeable.” Thus he won the delegate showdown today. Mueller began his debating career in school. During the afollowing summer, he participated in GYLC (Global Young Leaders’ Conference), which was held in Washington DC and in New York. Surprisingly, this is Mueller’s first year attending the THIMUN conference. He expressed that his goal this year at THIMUN-Singapore was to further his experience in debating and to become acquainted with more people of different nationalities. He happily mentioned that this goal had been achieved and said that THIMUN presented a very “nice atmosphere.” Although Mueller’s speeches were not loud, his strength lay in the ability to speak fluently, to the point, insightful and with a clear understanding of his topic. As the Park mentioned, it was Mueller’s “strong presence” that induced him to elect Mueller as the Delegate of the Day.As the Delegate of Portugal, Mueller was especially satisfied with yesterday’s session where they debated a resolution concerning the conservation of energy. He said, “My speech was about how important it is to reduce carbon dioxide emission by using renewable energy and solar power.” Mueller found the debate very interesting. Although the process in passing the resolution was difficult and confusing, the delegates still managed to come together in the end by combining five different resolutions. As to his future, Mueller would like first to attend college, and after graduation, go into banking investments, financing, or working in multinational companies. During his spare time he also enjoys tennis, football, golf, and water sports such as water skiing. Throughout the week-long THIMUN conference, each delegate works hard, both during the conference and after, so that they can present their issues with confidence. Mueller did likewise, and showcased his individual talent as a very logical and persuasive speaker. We can rest assured that he will continue his hard work as a public speaker and further his talents in debates in the days to come.
